Design Feature: Midland Brick

We talk to the Pindan Homes design experts involved in creating the beautiful ‘Soho’ in Claremont

08.01.2020

The ‘Soho’ by Pindan Homes demonstrates how using brick as a design feature can add colour, warmth and texture to any size space. The design experts from Pindan Homes told us all about the inspiration and design details of the Soho, which also features a classic product from Midland Brick.

Question:
How did you manage to achieve such a large living space on such a narrow bock?

Answer:
The Soho in Claremont demonstrates how careful design can make the most of a tight and narrow block. The ground floor, with almost no hallways or passages, has a great sense of space. Plus, with the living areas opening out to front and side courtyards you get a very surprising 322m² of living space on this small 260m² block.

Question:
What design features have been included to help with the efficiency and comfort of the house?

Answer:
The heart of this home is the light-filled living space that flows into the galley kitchen. Upstairs, the spacious master suite features a hotel-style ensuite. The other two bedrooms are both large, with an additional sitting area – perfect for a kids retreat! The solar orientation of the home is also well planned, with the bi-fold doors attracting the morning sun to maximise the amount of light into living areas.

Question:
On small lot homes, storage is often seen as a problem. How have you overcome this?

Answer:
The entire wall in the living area features custom designed cabinetry, including an AV entertainment hub; this is in addition to a scullery and bar cabinets. We have also included a store room in the garage, an additional linen cupboard upstairs and bonus storage in the study area. Finally, all bedrooms boast walk-in or built-in robes.

Question:
Were there any challenges building in this established neighbourhood?

Answer:
There are always challenges and considerations when building in an established neighbourhood. With our experience, we are very aware of noise restrictions and controls, block limitations, existing fencing, parapet walls and other issues that come to bear with residential homes on adjoining blocks.

Building on narrow blocks requires very careful planning and site management. It’s always important to work with councils and to take into consideration the needs of the neighbours.

Question:
What prompted the selection of the Restoration Red Coached brick as a design feature?

Answer:
We chose the Restoration Red Coached brick to contrast the render and highlight the structural elements of the facade to achieve a striking street appeal.

We wanted this narrow lot home to really make an impact, and face brick detailing is quite a popular trend at the moment – so the Restoration Red Coached brick was a perfect fit. We feel it’s really helped make the Soho one of our most striking two storey display homes to date.
